Letter from Our Pastor Fr. Fernando

I would like to pause our talks on the liturgy for a moment and share a little about my experience at the priestly retreat I recently had the opportunity to attend. Around 800 priests ordained in missionary seminaries throughout North, Central, and South America gathered for a retreat in Porto San Giorgio, Italy, to meditate on the priesthood and evangelization. It was a great joy and consolation to be there, to share this experience with many priests whom I knew from my city and with some of the brothers with whom I shared my years in seminary.

During the retreat, we were sent out two by two to evangelize throughout Italy, sharing the Word of God with priests, encouraging them in their ministry, and speaking with the people we encountered on the streets. We were sent like the apostles: without money, without securities, but trusting completely in the providence of God. It was a beautiful joy to spend those days announcing the Gospel and witnessing the many ways God was working through that mission.

When we returned, we reflected on the experiences of our mission and the missionary work taking place in our own communities. It was truly inspiring to hear the stories and to experience the many blessings that God continues to give to His Church.

Finally, we reflected on our mission as priests: our call to bring the Good News of the Resurrection of Christ to everyone, and the great need to offer a Christian initiation to this generation. So many people have lost their faith or have walked away from the Church, often because they have never had the opportunity to be truly formed in the faith. There are many people who, during the difficult moments of life, search for answers and turn to other things because they do not know where else to look. Yet the answer is Christ. The answer is to lead people to encounter Him and to come to know His love. We have been given a great grace here at St. Michael’s: the opportunity to have a Christian Initiation where we can accompany people and help them grow in the faith, forming the mature Christian faith that our society so deeply needs.

I encourage everyone not to be afraid to announce the Gospel, to invite others to encounter Christ, and to share the hope we have received. Let us continue to work together for the Kingdom of Heaven.
